MANCHESTER, GA – Two Meriwether County teenagers are $500 richer today after writing award-winning essays about their experience in the Money Smart personal finance study program provided by SouthCrest Bank.
The students, Carnell Greenfield of Manchester High School and Markeshia Jackson of Greenville High School, were honored and received their $500 scholarship checks during Senior Night May 18.
“We are always, always, always wanting to give back to our community, and this is a perfect way to do that,” said Robin Wilkinson, Vice President/Branch Manager at the Manchester branch of SouthCrest Bank. “This program is as rewarding for us as it is for the students.”
Seniors at Manchester and Greenville high schools spend one hour a week for four weeks in the program, which includes lessons that teach them how to set and reach financial goals, financial planning, income and expense management, cash flow, tracking spending, saving for a rainy day, compounding interest, savings options, and paycheck pros and paycheck puzzles.
At the program’s conclusion, students have the option of writing an essay about the experience. The essays by Carnell and Markeshia were judged the best.
“A fun way to help teens get smart about money,” states the descriptor on the front page of the Money Smart study guide each student receives.
This is the first year of the program, Mrs. Wilkinson said. It has been so beneficial in helping teens understand money management that SouthCrest intends to continue it in years ahead. Manchester HS had 100 seniors take part and Greenville had 62 seniors participate in the program.
The Manchester branch of SouthCrest Bank also donates $1,500 a year to the Reach Georgia Foundation, which rewards students for self-accountability, promotes parent involvement and provides motivation and support for teens to encourage educational achievement.
